Poverty or fear of poverty keeps women trapped in violent situations

  • Lack of economic independence is one of the main causes women cite for remaining in violent situations.

  • Many women living in poverty have a lower sense of self-worth which makes it harder to assume independence.

  • Women have difficulty finding somewhere to live after leaving a shelter due to a lack of affordable housing and may return to a violent situation. [9]
