Level Three: Occupational Pension Plans and RRSPs

  What it is

  What it provides

 Occupational Pension Plans

 Employer-regulated pension plans.

Private retirement savings plans. Contributions are encouraged through tax breaks.

 Variable depending on contributions.

Only 42% of workers contribute to an occupational pension plan. Men far outnumber women in such plans.

Lower wage workers are less likely to have occupational pension plans.

Individuals who experience many years of poverty are unlikely to be able to contribute much to an RRSP and are very likely to remain poor in old age.
