Gender-based health care for heart disease.

Mrs. Karen Stevens is a 64 year old woman from London. She asks you to call her by her first name. She is a homemaker and lives with her husband of 36 years. Karen describes herself as happy and healthy woman. Apart from her routine daily activities, she does not exercise.

She does not smoke, although she did in her twenties and thirties, and does not drink alcohol.

She is only on one medication, atorvastatin calcium, for high cholesterol. She is post-menopausal and does not use hormone-replacement therapy. She has never had any major illness, and her only admissions to hospital were for the birth of her two children.

Karen has come for her first appointment with you, a cardiologist. She was referred by a locum covering for her family physician.
